Promotional Project for the Connemara area in Galway to encourage exploration of the area. This project consisted of a short GIF and a series of ten 6 ft x 2 ft long posters.
. This project was completed at the 2018 Design West.Hy-Brasil is a phantom island said to lie in the Atlantic Ocean west of Ireland. Nautical maps between the 13th and 19th century placed the island off the west coast of Galway. The reason for the island being excluded from further cartographic studies was that it never existed in the first place or it had sunk into the Atlantic Ocean from rising sea levels.
This project represents Hy-Brasil’s disappearance and reappearance over time. This vanishing takes place in the form of nautical maps and the distortion of the myths surrounding Hy-Brasil.
This style of Op art allows for the hiding of typography in clear sight. Through-out the poster series, each poster's lines are gradually warped until Hy-Brasil has completely disappeared. As the warping advances, a topographic visual of the ocean floor begins to take form.
